The Three Stages of the Lash Cycle and How They Impact a Lash Lift

Ever wondered why a week or two after having a lash lift you have some lashes more lifted than others? That's because your lashes are constantly and simultaneously going through a three-phase cycle.

Understanding the lash cycle is essential for maintaining stunning lash lift results.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

1. Anagen (Growth) Phase

  • Lashes are actively growing from the follicle

  • This phase lasts 30-45 days

  • Lashes are shorter and more delicate, which can affect the uniformity of a lash lift as they continue to grow

  • It's estimated 40% of lashes are at this phase

2. Catagen (Transition) Phase

  • The lash stops growing, and the follicle begins to shrink

  • The hair detaches from the dermal papilla, which is a source of nourishment

  • Lashes are mature and healthy looking but not ready to shed

  • Lasts around 2-3 weeks

  • 20% of lashes will be in this phase

3. Telogen (Shedding) Phase

  • The final stage where mature lashes fall out naturally

  • Lasts 3-4 months

  • Lashes in this phase may shed shortly after a lash lift, reducing fullness

  • Approximately 40% of your lashes will be in this phase

How It Affects a Lash Lift

  • Anagen phase lashes may grow out quickly, requiring a touch-up sooner -

6 weeks rather than 8 weeks

  • Lashes in the catagen phase provide the longest-lasting results

  • Telogen phase lashes may shed soon after the lift, affecting the fullness

Best Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid steam from saunas, showers, baths, cookers, dishwashers for 24 hours to let the lift set

  • Nourish lashes daily with a lash conditioning serum to keep them hydrated and strong

  • Avoid exercise for the first 24 hours

  • Use a clean spoolie daily to maintain curl and prevent tangling

  • Book touch-ups every 6-8 weeks to maintain consistent results

The right aftercare ensures your lash lift stays flawless, no matter your lash cycle stage!

I will always analyse your lashes before a treatment to make sure they are in good health and advise you to use a lash serum conditioner (not enhancer) a part of your aftercare.
